Linux desktops

Set up your desktop, make it your own, and find help with everyday tasks. Start here whether you are installing Linux for the first time or getting comfortable with a new desktop environment.

Getting started

A Linux distribution provides the operating system and software packages. Its desktop environment provides the panels, application launcher, windows, and settings you interact with.

  1. Prepare your computer. Back up your files and check your chosen distribution's hardware requirements and installation instructions.
  2. Try a live session when available. Before installing, check your display, Wi-Fi, sound, keyboard, and pointing device.
  3. Install and update. Follow the installer carefully, especially when selecting a disk. After your first login, use the distribution's software updater and restart if prompted.
  4. Finish setup. Connect your accounts as needed, set your time zone, and configure screen locking and backups.

Everyday tasks

Install applications

Open your distribution's software center to search for, install, and update applications. Package names and available software vary by distribution.

Use trusted software sources and read permission requests before installing.

Manage your files

Use the file manager to browse your home folder, organize documents, and access removable drives.

Eject removable storage through the file manager before unplugging it.

Connect devices

Open system settings to configure networking, Bluetooth, printers, audio, and displays. Some devices need additional drivers supplied by your distribution.

Make the desktop your own

  • Appearance: choose a wallpaper, theme, text size, and display scaling in settings.
  • Workflow: configure keyboard shortcuts, workspaces, and your favorite applications.
  • Accessibility: explore screen reading, magnification, high contrast, and keyboard accessibility options.
  • Privacy: review screen lock timing, notifications, and application permissions.

Setting names differ between desktop environments. Search within your settings application if an option is not immediately visible.

Troubleshooting

No network connection

Check airplane mode, confirm Wi-Fi is enabled, and reconnect to your network. For wired connections, check the cable and port. See whether another device can use the same network.

No sound

Check the system volume and the application's volume, then select the intended output device in sound settings. Bluetooth and HDMI devices may appear as separate outputs.

Display or application problems

Save your work, install available updates, and restart. Check display resolution and scaling for screen issues. For an application problem, note the exact error and whether other applications are affected.
